Shorts of the Summer

The dreaded shorts season is in full force. Every year, we beg for summer to come. We want the beach, no school, swim meets, and being outside. Yet the thought of putting on short’s dangles in the back of our minds. Well, we are here to help you wear shorts this summer in confidence, while looking stylish! There are so many types of shorts out there. It is all about finding the right one! From high rise to low rise, long to short, drawstring or pull on, we have you covered!

Depending on where you are going, a different style of short is necessary. If you are going to be doing lots of walking in warm weather on a vacation or shopping, opt for paper bag shorts or linen shorts. Jean shorts can get uncomfortable and sticky in warm weather for long periods of time. If you need something to throw on to pick the kids up from camp, try the linen shorts with a graphic tee and sneakers! If you ever need any help, send your selfies in, and we will respond in 15 minutes!

Lets break it down by types:

Jean Shorts

“Daisy Duke bikini on top!” No, in all seriousness, jean shorts or “jorts” do not need to be short. Right now, if you go online to a retailer who sells jean shorts, they come in long Bermuda length, a “mom” length with a 5in inseam, and the shorter 3in inseam. The one excellent thing about jeans shorts is that they are extremely easy to hem because they frequently have a raw hem. If you can’t t find a 4in inseam, grab a 5in pair and your kitchen scissors and get to chopping! Remember to measure the cut so both sides are even, start small as you can always cut off more. And, remember that they will fray, so give yourself a little bit of extra length.

Being made of denim, jean shorts can be styled in an almost identical way as jeans. They are incredibly versatile and are practically a neutral. A bonus is that if you want a pop of color, they also come in an array of colors for an affordable price. In the summer, wearing jean shorts with a white button-down, gold jewelry, and sandals is such a chic look. If you are ever struggling to elevate a jean shorts look, try French tucking your shirt in and adding gold jewelry!

Paper Bag Shorts

For a very long time, I have had my hesitation about paper bag shorts. However, this season I am in love with them! They do wonders for cinching your waist in and flatting you in the best ways! In recent years more and more variations of this style of shorts have appeared. You can now find them in any print imaginable! I have seen them in floral, plaid, to beaded, to just a solid bright color!  Furthermore, you can now find them without the bow belt that they were notorious for! Paper bag shorts without the bow can create an elevated look that brings your style game up effortlessly.

Since paper bag shorts are loose at the top, opt for a fitted top. Bodysuits and tailored blouses are great options! This style tip is follows the basic rule that if you wear something loose like pants, wear a tight top. The opposite also applies! Choosing more fitted pieces will help give your body figure and make sure that you are wearing your clothes and your clothes are not wearing you! If you need to bring your look to another level, try adding a blazer. A consistent fun combination is having your blazer and shorts being the same color. Then, wear a print for a top, and you have a stunning outfit!

Linen Shorts

Let me tell you, linen shorts are my lifesaver! They feel like pajama shorts, yet when you wear them, you look put together. Linen shorts cover a broad range of styles. They come in high-waisted, low waited, mid-rise, a tie, an elastic top, a button top, and many more variations. These style variations allow everyone to wear them, it is just about finding what pair looks best on you! Once you start looking, you will also discover that they come in many different colors. I recommend buying neutral colors and staying away from the patterns to keep a classy, elevated look!

I have a pair of linen shorts with an elastic top. At least once a week, you will catch me wearing them with a graphic tee and sneakers or sandals, depending on the day. To make the outfit look more stylish, I always accessorize with bangle bracelets and layered necklaces. For a more elevated look, I recommend wearing linen shorts with either a drawstring or a button. Then, pair them with a blouse or button-down, tucking it in completely or in a French tuck. If you are looking for a more on-the-go look, try the elastic top with a graphic tee or cropped tee. Linen shorts can be worn with sandals or sneakers, so don’t be afraid to try new ways to wear them!

Tailored Shorts

The tailored shorts are your dressy shorts. They can be pleated, pintuck, or just plain! I absolutely love when they are midrise to high waited as they extenuate your waist and give you more of a figure. I also love how these shorts can easily take an outfit from not quite perfect to a stunning fit! They just add that extra element of texture or pattern that pulls an outfit together!

These shorts are overall very versatile and can be worn with a blazer, blouse, bodysuit, or really anything! My favorite way to wear my tailored shorts this summer is with a puff sleeve. Adding this trendy element to a classic look makes you look modern and stylish. I recommend investing in a quality pair of tailored shorts that will last you many seasons and then switching up the accessories you wear with them to apply the season’s style to them. If you want to ease into the trends, wear a classic outfit and then some trendy sandals with a kitten heel or studs on them!

Hope you find all these details about shorts helpful,

Ladies and gentlemen, it is the time of the year where we get to talk about my favorite holiday, the Fourth of July! This is one of the absolute best days of the year. A day where you get to hang with family, friends, eat good food drink cold drinks and end the day watching fireworks.

Although it may sound relaxing, we all know at some point or another we will be stressed about what to wear during this weekend full of festivities. Let us help you plan your outfits so that you can sit back, relax and enjoy the day!

Although the Fourth of July goes hand in hand with stars and stripes, try to leave them to the decorations. Right now, it is all about having the red, white, and blue color scheme and bringing in a unique pattern for novelty. But that’s where the fun begins! The options are endless on what you can do to look fun, festive, and stand out!

Backyard BBQ

The backyard BBQ is the time of the day when memories are made! If you are in the south, where it is scorching hot, choose a loose graphic tee. Having the t-shirt not touching you will help you remain cool and not feeling sticky. Remember, do not wear a white top! Nothing is worse than looking at a picture and seeing a BBQ sauce stain. For shorts, jean shorts are the easiest to throw on to dress up the casual outfit. Also, if you don’t have white jean shorts, it is perfectly acceptable to wear blue jean shorts with a blue outfit! Have some fun with your accessories! Bring in all the red, white, and blue you want and show your patriotism!

The main thing when creating a backyard BBQ outfit is picking something that you can move around in. You might be leaning down to grab a beer from the cooler or playing with kids, so planning for that will save you from being uncomfortable. If you never wear red, white, or blue jewelry but want to have some fun, check out places such as Target, Walmart, or H&M for affordable options.

Brunch at the Club

Hello mimosa! Didn’t you hear? Festivities start early on the Fourth! Many people will be wearing the same variation of an outfit, so it’s important to have some fun and stand out! My favorite way to do this is by mixing patterns and textures. Go for one bold print and one subtle print. Use your accessories to tie the two together and make a cohesive outfit. Since it is relatively early, wear subtle accessories. Simple huggee earrings and bangle bracelets still contribute to the theme but do not draw too much attention.

If you have anything uncomfortable or hot, but it’s perfect for the 4th, wear it to brunch! This is the ideal time to showcase a personal favorite because you most likely will be getting pictures, be sitting down, and be in air conditioning!

Dinner on the Cruise

I mean, what is better than getting dressed up in a festive outfit! This summer’s floral trend is perfect for evening wear because it allows you to wear red and blue simultaneously. On other occasions, you might be hesitant to overpower an outfit with color, but the Fourth of July gives you that excuse! My main piece of advice for making sure your outfit doesn’t clash is to find accessories that are the same shade. This will give an effortless pulled-together look that still makes you pop!

If you lean more toward the all-white side of red, white, and blue, stick to a solid color dress. Then, in your accessories, pull in the other colors to bring it to the theme. A great way to incorporate all three colors is doing earrings in one color, shoes in another, and then tying the two colors together in a purse or clutch.

Day at the beach

Ok, I get it, it’s the Fourth of July. You walked into Target, and you see the display of stared and striped swimsuits and think, perfect. NO! Keep walking! Just behind those swimsuits is an adorable, patterned swimsuit in red or blue. Leave the stars and striped to your kids!

For swimsuits, I love a one-piece that doubles as a top! You can tie a sarong around it or put on flowy pants or a skirt giving you one less item to pack. For the swimsuit outfit, stick to red or blue in combination with white. This gives the outfit an elegant pulled-together look that looks like it was styled by a professional! If you want colored sandals that can get a little beat up at the beach, try Target, Old Navy, and Banana Republic.

Watching Fireworks

Arguably the most important event of the day, if not the most memorable event of the day, is the firework show. By this time in the day, everyone has showered, eaten dinner, and it has begun to cool off outside. Slim-fit jeans are a great place to start as they won’t stick to you and make you hot while still dressing you up. To avoid the stereotypical tank top, try a one-shoulder top! Tops are a great place to bring in patterns to add novelty to your outfit! A bonus with one-shoulder tops is you don’t need a necklace, and if it is long sleeve, you don’t need bracelets either. When watching the fireworks, fun earrings are a must! Kitten heels are very trendy this summer; however, the Fourth of July might not be the best time to wear them as you might be in the grass. If you want to wear a low heel, opt for a block heel to prevent you from sinking into the ground.

Altogether, when creating an outfit to watch the fireworks, pick one solid piece of clothing, pants, or top, and then make the other one a patter. Tie your earrings, shoes, and purse into the colors of the top. Don’t be afraid to play around with mixing patterns and textures! If you want to have fun with your earrings, check out Bauble Bar for unique themed pieces!

Watching the Parade

I don’t know about you, but I LOVE the parade. It is when the patriotism and festivity are brought to life, and you cannot help but smile. I love dresses at parades because they are light, breezy, and easy to wear. Parades are the perfect occasion for prints because it is the time when everyone goes all out. Additionally, with a pattern, you can wear neutral accessories that you most likely already have. To avoid looking too cliché, I would recommend sticking to two colors. This will help you look chic and add an extra element of style. Additionally, to help set you apart, try a small heel! They are still very comfortable, and they elongate your legs!

Comfort is the main thing for the parade. At a parade, there is rarely shade and often some walking. This is the time to think through the practicality of your outfit.  My biggest tip is that you do not wear a strapless bra, sticky boobs, wedges, or any other shoe that could hurt or rub a blister. Trust me, you will regret it.

Happy Fourth of July Yall

Summer-Chic Capsule Wardrobe

Hello Summer! I am so excited for the sunshine, warm weather, and all the events that come with it! However, when a busy day is ahead, the last thing anyone wants to stress about is what to wear. This post will alleviate the overwhelming feeling you get when standing in your closet and “having nothing to wear” and allow you to get dressed stress-free. This summer capsule wardrobe will enable you to effortlessly put together many outfit variations from very few timeless pieces that you can wear year after year!

The main difference between capsule wardrobes during different seasons is the color palette. Many of you most likely have some of these pieces in your closet, and you can build on them by adding new colors. However, if you are looking for a place to start, focus on the lighter and neutral colors of the summer season. Then, as it transitions to fall, you can build fall colors into your wardrobe.

1. Button Up Shirt

Now, you might be thinking that button-ups can come across as professional-looking, but NO! The button-up top is a staple and should become your new best friend. For the summer, look at silk, cotton, or a light linen material. Colorful button-ups are very trendy this summer. If you are beginning your capsule wardrobe, avoid them and stick to the neutrals. White, black, tan, navy, and the color you look best in are great foundations! However, if you fall victim to the trend (I don’t blame you), don’t splurge, as you will most likely not be wearing it in a couple of years.

To keep it casual, the fit should be looser. Utilize French tucks, a half-tuck, or knotting it in the front to give your body figure. If you wear the button-down untucked, especially with jeans, make sure it hits at your natural hip to give your body proportion! Cuffing or rolling the sleeves provides the top with a fresh look and also helps keep you cool! Best places to by a button down:

Brands under $50 Banana Republic, Gap, Zara

Brands under $100 Everlane, J. Crew, Reformation

2. Slim Fit Jeans

Yes, you can still wear your skinny jeans, I promise! However, a good pair of slim-fit jeans are easier to throw on and being comfy in (and they are semi-lose, so you don’t have to wiggle them on ☺). If you do not already own slim-fit jeans, I recommend getting medium or light wash denim with no distressing. They are still casual enough for a t-shirt and sneakers but have the potential to be dressed up with a blazer and heels.

Slim-fit jeans are tight through the knee and then loosen up into a straight cut. They are NOT the same as wide-leg or super skinny jeans. They highlight your legs and allow for them to be elongated. Look for a pant that hits right above your angle. This will allow you to wear the jeans with sneakers, sandals, and heels! A tip for hemming your jeans is a good DIY with kitchen scissors and a measuring tape. Start small and try on your jeans with shoes after every cut. Trust me, everyone does this and if your jeans fray a little bit, cut off the string!

Brands under $50  ASOS, Banana Republic, Zara

Brands under $100  Everlane, Gap, Madewell

3. White Sneakers

If you do not already own a pair of white sneakers, run, do not walk to the mall! I promise you when I say that these are lifesavers. Expensive white sneakers are not needed, and there are many for under $100 that even celebrities such as Megan Markle wear. Many white sneakers on the market right now have small color accents on the side or back of them. I would recommend going for a neutral color such as white, black, navy, beige, silver, or gold. This way, the shoe is truly versatile, and you can wear it with any outfit.

Now, if you are anything like me or my family, a pair of white sneakers would not last a month and would constantly need clearing. I’m going to let you in on a secret, Mr. Clean magic erasers. These work on all materials except suede and take less than two minutes of scrubbing for your shoes to look brand new again!

4. A Suit

The great thing about this part of the summer capsule wardrobe is that almost everyone has a suit! If you do not, no worries! They have recently become so popular that you can find a good quality one for relatively inexpensive. I recommend a beige or white suit. The light color in the summer is classic, lasting you a lifetime if well taken care and is tailored to fit your body like a glove. The pant style does not matter as long as it fits your body well, but I recommend mid-rise to high-waisted. To keep the blazer modern and feeling chic, I like a more oversized feel. It should fit well in your shoulders and your arms, but go a little past your hips.

Here is where it gets fun! Wearing suit pieces individually is a huge trend right now. You can put on a graphic tee with sneakers or sandals to dress it down with the suit pants. You can also wear them with wedges and a blouse to dress it up. The blazer can be worn with shorts and jeans as well as a blouse or t-shirt!

Many of the pieces I mentioned, such as sandals, heels, a graphic tee, and a t-shirt are not classic and will be out of style within the next couple of years. To avoid splurging on something that will not give you much in return, stores such as Target, Walmart, TJ Maxx, and Nordstrom Rack are great places to shop.

For sandals, I like to get these at Target and small boutiques. They have a consistent selection of neutral sandals (and trendy ones for when you want to add a twist) that are most likely under $25.

For heels, it is all about comfort. If you want a wedge instead of a heel, Target is still a great place to shop. However, if you want a true heel, I recommend brands: Sam Eddleman, Vince Camuto and Dolce Vita. You can even find these brands at Nordstrom Rack or Amazon, just remember to set your search filter to narrow in on these brands so you don’t have to search so long!

For a plain cotton t-shirt, please search no farther than Target. Universal Thread makes the best quality and most comfortable tees for $8. They are a looser women’s fit, so you can get your actual size.

For a graphic tee, my favorite shop is Saturday Morning Pancakes. They have the best ones with song lyrics and even make some ones for the littles. Chaser brand is so soft and can be found at Nordstrom, and occasionally Amazon.

Happy Shopping!
